4 Essential Facts Concerning Teeth Whitening

Are you considering proceeding with a teeth whitening treatment?  Before having the treatment, you may have concerns or doubts. When you have teeth whitening from a professional, you have nothing to fear.  At Ivy Rose Family Dentistry, we are often asked about teeth whitening.  Here are four facts we love to share.

Teeth Whitening Safety

Professional teeth whitening treatments should never harm your teeth.  Our team takes special care to assess every teeth whitening situation taking into consideration your dental health.  Every patient has a different amount of enamel and some may have recession that can cause exposure of the cementum. People with very thin enamel and/or recession can have extreme sensitivity.  Therefore, the whitening solution is assessed prior to placement and the teeth are isolated to protect those areas of recession. We will often recommend a desensitizing toothpaste prior to whitening and a desensitizing solution after treatment to minimize discomfort for those patients that are prone to sensitivity.

Teeth Whitening Frequency

Teeth whitening solutions are not meant to be a one-and-done permanent solution.  To maximize results, teeth whitening is combined with in-office and at-home treatments.  The frequency of touch-ups will depend on the amount of stain-causing foods and beverages that a person consumes such as tea, coffee, wine.  Extending the effect of treatment is possible with regular hygiene and avoidance of such foods in addition to not smoking.

Candidacy for Teeth Whitening

Everyone is a good candidate for teeth whitening procedures.  Children (under the age of 16) and pregnant women should not be recipients of this type of dental treatment.

Forms of Teeth Whitening

Several types of procedures to whiten teeth exist.  Some whitening treatments are chemically activated and others are light activated. There are different percentages of solutions and a variety of solutions to help reduce sensitivity and whiten more efficiently. Speak with your dentist about what would be best for your situation.
